DaVinci Resolve 20

The most AI in one application, and free unless you need Studio.

Resolve 20 added IntelliScript, which takes a written script, matches it against your recorded takes, and assembles a rough cut. It also does animated subtitles, multicam smart switching, and AI-driven audio cleanup. The Neural Engine runs on your Mac's GPU, so most of this happens locally.

Studio is $295 as a one-time purchase and unlocks the full AI set. The free version is not crippled — it's a real NLE with no watermark and no export cap.

Who it's for: anyone doing multicam, color grading, or finishing work. Anyone who wants to pay once.

Who it isn't for: someone who records themselves talking to a camera and wants captions on it by lunchtime. You will spend a week learning Resolve to use 5% of it.

Final Cut Pro

Apple's editor, $299 as a one-time purchase, or $12.99/month as part of the Creator Studio bundle.

FCP's AI is narrower than Resolve's but better integrated. Magnetic Mask isolates subjects without a green screen and does it fast on Apple silicon. Transcribe to Captions generates captions from audio, on-device.

What FCP does not have: automatic silence removal, filler word removal, or transcript-based editing. If your reason for wanting AI is "stop making me scrub the timeline for dead air," FCP won't solve that. You'd cut silence manually or run the footage through something else first.

Adobe Premiere Pro

$22.99/month for the single app. The most mature text-based editing of anything here.

Premiere's Text-Based Editing transcribes your clip, shows the transcript in a panel, and lets you delete sentences to cut the timeline. It also detects and removes filler words — "um," "uh," "you know" — as a single operation. Newer releases added Generative Extend, Media Intelligence search, and caption translation.

Adobe's AI is a mix. Transcription runs locally. The generative features run on Adobe's servers.

If you already pay for Creative Cloud, Premiere's text-based editing is the best version of this feature you already own. If you don't, $22.99/month for one feature is steep.

Descript

$24/month on Hobbyist annual, $35/month on Creator monthly, per seat. Creator caps at 30 media hours per month.

Descript inverted the interface: the transcript is the editor, and the timeline is secondary. Delete a word, the video cuts. It also does studio sound, overdub voice cloning, and screen recording, and the collaboration is genuinely good for teams.

Everything uploads. Every hour counts against your plan. For a weekly podcaster, 30 hours goes faster than it sounds once you account for re-uploads.

CapCut Desktop

Free to download, and the free tier does more than most people expect: auto-captions, timeline editing, 1080p export, no watermark.

CapCut Pro at $19.99/month or $179.99/year adds 4K export, silence removal, filler word removal, and cloud storage.

CapCut's problem on Mac isn't capability, it's shape. The AI tools are buried under menus in a general-purpose editor, and the silence removal in particular takes 8–12 minutes on a 5-minute video once you include review. We timed it in does CapCut remove silence automatically.

BlitzCut

$16.99/month, $69.99/year, or $6.99/week, with a 3-day trial. A $129.99 lifetime purchase is also available. One subscription covers Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

BlitzCut is deliberately small. About 100MB. It imports your recording, removes silence on-device, gives you the transcript as the editing surface, adds captions, and exports up to 4K. That's the whole application.

Nothing uploads. Silence removal runs on your Mac's Neural Engine, which means it works on a plane and it doesn't meter your hours.

What it doesn't do: color grading, multicam, motion graphics, effects, transitions beyond the basics. If your work needs those, use Resolve.
