YouTube Shorts Length Limits (2026): Maximum Length and What Counts as a Short

YouTube Shorts can be up to 3 minutes long. That limit was raised from 60 seconds in late 2024, which is why a great deal of published advice still says one minute. Length isn't the only thing that makes a video a Short, though — YouTube also requires a vertical or square aspect ratio. Upload a 3-minute horizontal video and it's a regular video, no matter how short it is.

The two conditions are both required. A video is treated as a Short when it is 3 minutes or under and vertical or square. Fail either and it's an ordinary YouTube video.

Why Sources Disagree

YouTube has moved this limit twice:

15 seconds in the earliest version of the Shorts camera
60 seconds for most of the format's life, and the number burned into every guide written before 2025
3 minutes from October 2024 onwards

The 60-second figure was correct for years and appears in an enormous amount of still-published advice. It's out of date.

One historical detail that still matters: the 3-minute limit applied to newly uploaded Shorts from the change onwards. Videos uploaded before it took effect kept the rules they were published under.

Uploading vs Recording In-App

Recording in the Shorts camera caps each recording session at 60 seconds. This is a camera limitation, not the format limit — and it's why people still believe Shorts are a minute long.

Uploading from your device allows the full 3 minutes, provided the video is vertical or square. If you want a Short longer than a minute, record with your phone's own camera and upload the file.

This is the same trap as TikTok's in-app recording limit, and it produces the same confusion.

Format and Spec Requirements

Aspect ratio: vertical (9:16) or square (1:1). Horizontal video is never a Short.
Resolution: 1080 × 1920 is the target. Higher is downscaled.
Frame rate: 30 or 60fps.
Audio: using music from YouTube's Shorts library has historically carried its own length constraints, which can be shorter than the 3-minute video limit. Check before building a 3-minute Short around a licensed track.
Format: MP4 or MOV.

A horizontal video under 3 minutes will simply publish as a normal video and appear in the regular feed rather than the Shorts feed.

Should You Use the Full 3 Minutes?

Almost never, and the reason is worth understanding.

YouTube's Shorts feed rewards viewed vs swiped-away rate — whether people keep watching or scroll on. That metric punishes length harder than TikTok's completion-rate model does, because the swipe is instant and constant.

A 45-second Short watched to the end typically outperforms a 2-minute Short abandoned at 30 seconds. The longer video accumulates more raw watch time and a much worse ratio, and the ratio is what determines whether the feed keeps pushing it.

Practical guidance by content type:

The 3-minute ceiling exists to let a story finish, not as a target to fill. If your content genuinely needs three minutes, it may perform better as a standard YouTube video where the audience arrives with more intent.

The exception: longer Shorts can work when the payoff is clearly signposted early and the pacing never slackens. That requires tight editing, not more content.

Getting Under the Limit

If you're at 3 minutes 20 and need to be under 3:

Remove the silence first. Dead air between sentences is typically 10–20% of a talking-head recording. That alone usually clears the gap, and it improves pacing rather than harming it — pauses are exactly where viewers swipe.

Then cut a section, if something isn't earning its runtime.

Then speed up slightly. 1.1x to 1.25x is inaudible to most viewers. Above 1.5x it's noticeable, which is fine as a deliberate effect and tiring across a whole video.
