Free YouTube Thumbnail Maker

This YouTube thumbnail maker turns your photo and headline into a clean 16:9 image you can download as PNG or JPEG.

No account, image upload, AI generation, or watermark. Use your own image or start with a gradient background.

Use the YouTube thumbnail maker

JPEG, PNG, or WebP; up to 20 MiB and 40 million pixels. Local preview only—no image upload.

Use your own accurate promise. Line breaks are supported; text shrinks to fit, but is never silently cut off.

A full-frame photo covers the background; transparent areas reveal the gradient.

Live 16:9 preview · no watermark

Preview uses a 1280 × 720 working canvas. The large export redraws text at 3840 × 2160; enlarging a low-resolution photo does not add detail.

Check the thumbnail at phone size. Keep the title and image honest about the video; this tool does not predict clicks or upload to YouTube.

How to use the YouTube thumbnail maker

  1. Choose a photo you have permission to use, or extract a frame from your own recording with the thumbnail extractor.
  2. Write a short, accurate headline. Position and zoom the photo, then choose a readable text layout.
  3. Review at phone size. Select the export size and format, prepare the image, and check its actual file size before downloading.
  4. Upload through the thumbnail controls available to your channel in YouTube Studio. This tool does not connect to your account.

Check the current YouTube thumbnail requirements

YouTube's current thumbnail documentation recommends 3840 × 2160 for standard video thumbnails and a 16:9 ratio, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. This tool offers that large export and a smaller 1280 × 720 copy. A larger canvas cannot restore detail missing from the source photo.

Upload limits differ by device: the same documentation lists 2 MB for mobile video-thumbnail uploads and 50 MB for desktop video, Shorts, and podcast thumbnails. Custom thumbnails require a verified account. Shorts use a different portrait format; this tool is a landscape composer. Follow the linked current instructions for your placement.

YouTube's title and thumbnail tips emphasize legibility and avoiding an overcomplicated design. Match the image to the explanation in the video; no layout guarantees clicks or organic traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Is this an AI thumbnail generator?

No. It is a local image composer. You supply the headline and an optional image, choose the layout, and export the canvas. It does not generate people, remove backgrounds, or predict clicks.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The image is decoded and drawn in this browser. This tool has no image-upload request or remote-image URL input. Remove the image or reset the tool to clear the current design.

Can I make a Shorts thumbnail here?

This tool makes landscape 16:9 images for standard video thumbnails. YouTube currently recommends 9:16 for Shorts thumbnails, so use a portrait design rather than assuming this landscape export fits that placement.

Why is my download larger than 2 MB?

Image dimensions, detail, and format affect file size. PNG photos can be large. Try JPEG or the smaller export size, inspect the actual bytes shown, and check the current limit for the device and placement you use to upload.
